Why is it so easy to get acne when wearing a mouth and nose mask?
Unfortunately, our skin doesn't feel comfortable under the mask. Blackheads and pimples can easily spread around the nose, chin and cheeks. There can be several reasons for this:
We often wear masks for hours a day. Whether when traveling on public transport or when we have to wear them at work. The material of the mask rubs gently against the skin. For many people, there are only a few opportunities to take the mask off during the day. What sounds harmless at first causes tiny cracks that disrupt your skin barrier.
Once the skin barrier is disrupted, the door is open for pimples and blackheads to spread. In addition, breathing under the mask creates a moist and warm environment, which pimples and blackheads particularly like. This allows the intruders to spread in peace.
The cold winter months are also damaging to your skin. In spring and summer, the sun's rays help to reduce pimples and blackheads. Unfortunately, we get very little of this in winter. An additional stress factor is the constant change in temperature between the cozy warm homes or offices and the sometimes freezing temperatures outside. This makes it difficult for your skin to build up and maintain its natural protective barrier.
In contrast to “normal” acne, “maskne” is not a hormonal problem. This can definitely be seen as a plus point, as it makes it much easier for you to combat it.

What you can do about skin imperfections caused by masks
No matter whether you have been lucky so far and have been spared from “maskne” or whether it has already developed: With a few simple tricks you can protect yourself from it or at least reduce its effects or even reverse them completely.
1. Change your mask regularly
Masks that are worn more frequently and not washed in between or only washed by hand cause bacteria to spread more quickly. Skin blemishes are therefore inevitable.
Wearing the same mask for a long time is also a problem. It often gets damp after a short time. This creates the perfect environment for skin impurities . And if the mask gets damp, it no longer protects you anyway.
Basically, you should change your mask every day. If you are prone to skin imperfections, it is recommended that you change the mask several times a day.
It is also important to wash your everyday masks at the highest possible temperature. This will kill any germs. Use a gentle detergent that will not irritate your skin further.
2. Use little or no makeup
Even though modern make-up formulations are less likely to clog pores, wearing a mask can still lead to this problem. The friction with the skin causes the mask to work the products deeper into your skin. Additionally, hardly any air gets to your skin while you are wearing it. In the moist environment, your pores can easily become clogged by the make-up. Pimples and blackheads easily form in clogged pores. You still can't do without your make-up completely? Then it's best to use light textures like a tinted day cream.
3. Cleansing your facial skin
Just like washing your hands, cleaning your face is especially important to prevent bacteria from growing. Ideally, you should always wash your face when you take off the mask after wearing it for a long time.
This makes it easy to remove dirt that has worked its way deeper into the skin due to friction. To ensure that your skin is not damaged, you should use the right care products.
Mild cleansing gel against acne from our Sensitive series
If we wear the mask for many hours a day, we feel the need to wash our face much more often. And that's a good thing, because it means that skin impurities caused by the mask have almost no chance.
However, washing our face frequently also has a disadvantage: it puts strain on the skin, which in turn disrupts the natural protective barrier.
The skin then appears slightly pale and this can actually cause what you are actually trying to combat – acne.
The compromise between stressed skin and "maskne" is a mild cleansing gel. Our Sensitive cleansing gel cleanses your skin thoroughly without attacking the protective barrier. With the mild cleansing gel, it is no problem to wash your face more than twice a day. But only wash it when it is dirty!
What’s in Sensitive Wash Gel?
Our Sensitive Wash Gel contains mild surfactants that cleanse your skin very gently. The natural and plant-based surfactants ensure that dirt is removed from the pores and prevent bacteria from spreading. Unlike many other surfactants, the surfactants we use do not dry out your skin.
If you wash your face more than twice a day, it is important to avoid aggressive cleansers. Their ingredients make your skin feel very clean, but at the same time they dry it out. Only by using a mild cleansing gel against acne can you avoid drying out your skin.
The aggressive cleansing gels and creams also have another disadvantage: as long as you use them, they make your skin look beautiful. But if you stop using them, your skin often returns to its old state. Natural ingredients, on the other hand, support your skin directly and keep it in balance.
In addition to the natural surfactants, our mild cleansing gel also contains hemp oil and oat extract as powerful active ingredients . They prevent redness and ensure that your skin does not dry out. You are left with a feeling of soft and clean skin. Our mild cleansing gel is also vegan, natural, sustainable, and almost all raw materials are sourced from Germany.
