Facial care for sensitive skin must be one thing above all: gentle. Finding the right care products is often not that easy. Even a small dose of the wrong ingredients can cause sensitive skin to become irritated.
In this article, you will learn what sensitive skin is, which ingredients you should avoid and how to care for it properly.
What exactly is sensitive skin?
Sensitive or delicate skin usually manifests itself in an unpleasant feeling of tension. Redness and tingling quickly appear.
Healthy skin is protected from external influences by the natural skin barrier. In sensitive skin, this barrier is “defective”.
Imagine a wooden table standing in a garden:
If the varnish is intact, nothing will happen to the table. It will remain beautiful and the wood will be protected. If the varnish is no longer intact in some places, external influences will have a negative effect. Rain and sunlight penetrate the wood and make it brittle. The sun also bleaches it. Over time, the exterior of your table will change. If you don't treat it with the right varnish, it will break over time.
It's similar with the skin when its skin barrier is damaged. Your skin does an incredible amount of work every day. Its outermost layer (the epidermis) is the connection between us and our environment. This layer of skin is constantly being built up and broken down. New skin cells migrate outwards and are built up there to form a protective layer.
If your skin is healthy, this layer protects against the sun, prevents bacteria from entering, and maintains moisture levels, among other things.
If this skin barrier is disrupted, our skin reacts sensitively. Depending on how sensitive the skin is, this can happen even with minor influences.
Signs of sensitive skin
- feelings of tension
- increased flaking
- redness
- sensitive to heat or cold
- burning or itching
What you should definitely avoid if you have sensitive skin
If you use the wrong products, sensitive skin will react very quickly with burning or itching. You should therefore avoid the following products and active ingredients or only use them with caution.
Aggressive peelings
Sensitive skin must not be irritated even further. Therefore, you should definitely avoid aggressive peelings in your skin care routine. This will only irritate your skin even more.
With an aggressive peeling, your top layer of skin (epidermis) is not able to regenerate quickly enough, which disrupts its protective function and can cause redness and other discomfort very quickly.
If you have sensitive skin, you should only remove dead skin cells with a very gentle peeling. Also, don't use the peeling too often.
facial care without alcohol
Alcohol in care products is a difficult topic. You may be wondering what alcohol is doing in care products. This question is absolutely justified!
Alcohol is used in cosmetics and care products to make them last longer. This is simply because alcohol kills bacteria. But alcohol can also dry out the skin and thus be particularly irritating to sensitive skin.
However, not all alcohol is the same! There are alcohols that dry out your skin. And then there are the so-called fatty alcohols. These include cetearyl alcohol, which is also used in our Sensitive series. As the name suggests, fatty alcohols provide moisture instead of stealing it from your body.
This means that when fatty alcohols are used in cosmetic products, they can definitely be described as alcohol-free cosmetics, as they do not have the negative properties that other alcohols have.
Vitamin C and Retinol
Vitamin C and retinol have been considered absolute beauty boosters for several years. Vitamin C lightens age spots and stimulates cell renewal. Retinol is also supposed to even out and smooth the skin. However, both substances are very aggressive!
Even healthy skin needs to get used to using them. You shouldn't let these two ingredients get near sensitive skin. They will cause even more redness and tingling. Both substances actively "destroy" your top layer of skin in order to accelerate the process of build-up and breakdown described above.
Perfume
Care products that contain perfume can irritate your sensitive skin even more. Even if the cream smells nice, you should avoid it. Perfume is a major trigger for allergies and irritations.
How to properly care for your sensitive skin
Sensitive skin should therefore be treated with particular care. But that doesn't mean that you can't use any creams or soaps. You just need to know what's good for your skin. Sensitive skin needs active ingredients that soothe the skin and strengthen its barrier.
cleansing of sensitive skin
Cleaning your sensitive skin should be very gentle. It is important to use a facial soap that maintains your skin's natural moisture content. Sensitive skin does not like being washed too often! Morning and evening is completely sufficient.
facial care for sensitive skin
Face cream for sensitive skin should soothe it and moisturize it at the same time. Ideally, it contains additives that protect your skin from external influences.
An additional oil can be used as a care boost. Oils provide your skin with an extra amount of moisture and ensure a great glow.
powerful active ingredients for sensitive skin
Some active ingredients are particularly gentle on your sensitive skin and nourish it.
hemp oil
Hemp oil contains valuable omega-6 fatty acids. These strengthen your skin's natural protective barrier. The antioxidants it contains fight harmful free radicals and thus protect against premature skin aging. Hemp oil also has an anti-inflammatory effect and prevents redness and irritation. It moisturizes your skin and gives it a beautiful glow. And all without leaving it greasy.
oat extract
It is well known that oats have many health benefits as a food. But oats also have many positive properties in skin care and are particularly suitable for sensitive skin.
Oat extract has an anti-inflammatory effect, soothes your skin and provides it with plenty of moisture.
chamomile extract
Chamomile is a medicinal plant that has been known for centuries. Chamomile extract provides your sensitive skin with an extra portion of moisture and is very gentle. Its antibacterial effect counteracts skin impurities. It frees your skin of harmful substances without causing irritation.
All of the powerful active ingredients mentioned are included in our Sensitive Care range, which was developed especially for sensitive skin. Another plus point: We use vegan cosmetics in all of our products and only use natural ingredients.
The perfect care
With the right facial care for sensitive skin, you can gradually build up better protection. Your skin will then be better protected against harmful environmental influences and irritations will be avoided.
Our Sensitive range is ideal for sensitive skin: All products contain active ingredients such as hemp oil, chamomile and oat extract, which soothe your sensitive skin, give it plenty of moisture and protect it at the same time. The result is less irritation and a beautiful glow!
